Here is some mail I got from Ray Essick (the author of notes) in
November 1986 on how to get notes software. I believe the current
version to be 1.7...
Note that I am not sure sending a tape to Ray will work any more
as he may be ready to leave the University...

the notesfile system is available from UIUC using any of
the following methods:
(1) using uucp:
call the machine "uiucdcs" at (217) 333-8267 [1200 baud].
uucp signon is "uucp" and password is "uucp".
You want the file /usr/spool/uucppublic/Notes.tar [940kbytes].
if you have the "compress" program, you can retrieve the
file /usr/spool/uucppublic/Notes.tar.Z, which is only 330 kbytes.
(2) using the ARPAnet and FTP:
connect using anonymous FTP to the host "a.cs.uiuc.edu"
and ask for the file "/pub/Notes.tar". If you have the
compress program, you can get "/pub/Notes.tar.Z" which
is much smaller and will take about 1/3 as much time
to transit.
(3) using tapes and the US mail:
send a tape to:

include a return address, whether you want 800, 1600 or 6250
bpi format, and whether you prefer tar or cpio format.
Methods #1 and #2 are preferred because they don't require intervention at this
end. Tapes have a bad habit of hiding on the corner of my desk for
a while before they are returned to their rightful owner.
I don't need to see copies of any unix licenses. I don't need to have
you sign any non-disclosure agreements or licensing agreements.
