[news.software.notes] Unlocking a Locked News Group

barry@eriador.prime.com (12/21/89)

The comp.sys.mac news group on our Sun network is permanently locked -
the 'x' command tells me to "consult a guru". Our notes guru who
normally would deal with this problem is out until early January. His
assistant seems unable (unwilling?) to fix the problem since nothing
has been done to fix the problem in spite of several requests.

So, how does one clear the lock on a locked news group? Does this
require Superuser permissions?

Please reply by mail.

Thanks, Barry

I'm not sure what you mean by locked. If you don't have
permission to read/write the group, you might get something
simular. If this is the case then you need to have director
permissions for the notes file to fix it.

The lock files are kept in a directory called .locks which resides
in the notes directory in most cases. Not in .utilities but in the same
dir where al the topic dirs live. Rm the lock file for the problem topic
and then visit the topic and see if it is now working. If not you may need
to do some clean up work in the topic. Visit the index page of the topic and
as user notes or as a director of the notesfile ener "d". This will take
you to the directors page. Here you will see various state/configuration
information about the notesfile. Toggle the "o" for on/off. If the topic
was closed this will open it.

All of this assumes that you have the permission do do some low level
maint on these topics. AS a notefile administrator in the past I did
not like people to "help" me as it often resulted in me restoring the
topic directory from tape in order to fix their help.

Sometimes when a notesfile is locked and seems to be stuck in a funny
state I would close it and run a compression on it and that would fix it.

Locks are created during compression runs which your site may be running
automagicly. This lock file may have been created when one of these
failed to complete properly. You can determine this by looking in the
dir of the topic in question. If the compression was running there wil be extr
files there which are temp files created in the compression run.
