Rick Adams sent out rmgroups for most of the net.* newsgroups this weekend. This is NOT a mistake, it is part of the reorganization. All the groups being rmgrouped have a counterpart in the new setup. Specifically, the rmgroups that went out are for soc, misc, sci, comp, and news's old net names. Also, the old names for talk were rmgrouped for good measure, although they are already officially gone. Late this week (this means Tuesday night or Wednesday) we're going to send out newgroups for the rec.* groups, and then rmgroup the old names for rec groups in mid December. Since there are 64 rec groups, this is a substantial addition to your .newsrc file. I urge you to actually do the rmgroups at once, to avoid overflowing your active file. Since it can be a bother to type all those /usr/lib/news/rmgroup lines, enclosed is a shell script that will do the job. (There is a variation on this possible if you use ORGDISTRIB, however, I managed to delete that variation, so I apologize to anyone who needed it. If there is demand, that version can be posted.)
