News at revision 2.10.2 gained the "checkgroups" control message
to aid in the maintenance of news net-wide. After a few tries at
posting the chekcgroups message I stopped due to the large number
of sites not running 2.10.2 news -- and the large number of automatic
mail replies I got as a result.
Since then, 2.10.2, 2.10.3 and 2.11 news have all been widely installed.
A recent "version" control message by Rick Adams has shown the majority
of sites to be running 2.10.2 news or better.
So, boys and girls, later this week I am going to post a "live"
checkgroups message and see what happens. This should help
stabilize people's mailboxes after the last round of "net" group
deletions.
If for some reason you aren't carrying all the netwide groups, make
sure your news is compiled with the NOTIFY option set so the
checkgroups doesn't automatically create groups you don't want!
