[news.admin] ARGHHH ... more bad newgroup messages

tgl@zog.cs.cmu.edu (Tom Lane) (04/23/87)

Well, I now know what happened to tedk@laidback.UUCP, who sent out all those
newgroup control messages with the "moderated" keyword missing. I'm afraid
I have just done the same thing.

Some of the new groups didn't get created here, for reasons still undetermined.
I asked rick@seismo if repeat newgroup messages would be sent, and he said
no, I should create them by hand. He sent along a shell script for doing
so, which I ran without looking at it too closely... turns out it was
his script for sending out the newgroup messages! Moreover, it seems that
2.10.3 inews doesn't copy the "moderated" keyword from its command line
into the outgoing message. Thus the script sent out bogus newgroup messages.

The first thirty or so bogus newgroups have already propagated offsite
and are probably beyond catching. If you already repaired tedk's
damage, you'll have to do it over for:
	comp.ai.digest
	comp.binaries.amiga
	comp.sources.amiga
	comp.society
	comp.compilers
	comp.sys.ibm.pc.digest
	comp.sys.masscomp
	comp.sys.sequent
	comp.sys.sun
	comp.graphics.digest
	soc.human-nets
	comp.sys.mac.digest
	comp.binaries.mac
	comp.sources.mac
	comp.org.fidonet
	rec.mag.otherrealms
	comp.mail.maps
	rec.music.gaffa
	comp.newprod
	news.lists
	comp.os.research
	comp.os.os9
	comp.unix

Awfully sorry about this ...

(PS: the control messages went out from "netnews@pt.cs.cmu.edu",
but I'm posting this message under my own name.)
