News traffic has really grown in the past year - this is 2.4 MB/day!
The inet distribution isn't listed separately, but most of it's in
comp.all, which has gone from about 50% to 42% in a year, so it hasn't
made a major dent; much of the growth has been in the rec/soc/talk groups.
Average Propagation Delay to uunet has increased from 0.9 to 1.1 days;
I assume much of this is because people only call uunet at night.
How have people handled the additional load? I've had to expire
articles much faster than before, mainly because my history file is
limited to 1 megabyte (System V ulimit braindamage), though total disk
volume has also been a problem. Similarly, I've had rnews workload
problems during the day (ho95e is an elderly 1MIPS machine which has
real users on it); I hope CNews will help when I get it running.
