I believe that word of mouth and personal example are the best ways to get people to try out the news. Imagine, someone walks up to a student who has never used computers, or uses them little and dislikes them (an unfortunately common state), and hands them a flyer explaining how useful the usenet and computers are for information and relaxation... The student is going to look at it and say "computers are no fun, what kind of **** is this?" and toss it... Now, you walk up to an anti-computer friend, and say "Hey, come and see this neat/funny/sad/special/great/whatever! article..." and all of a sudden you have a convert. (Of course, they might come back and haunt you as their grades drop, they stop sleeping... :-) My vote: word of mouth. -Jay Libove (Jay.Libove@andrew.cmu.edu pitt!darth!libove!libove)
