Plz do not use the term "brain-damaged software".  Many UNIX operating systems,
including 2.9bsd, have a 14 character limit for file names.

The "proper" way, at least for "notes" (1.7) would be to use the "net.aliases"
file to map the local name to the name that the rest of the world uses.  The
distributed code maps file names on input, but does not remap them on output.
People, including myself, have written code that does this to.
