For no particularly obvious reason, I'm getting complaints like this one in /usr/lib/news/errlog: May 1 23:00 expire: Cannot open /usr/lib/news/nhistory (w): Permission denied The permissions: ls -ld /usr/lib/news drwxr-xr-x 2 root 1536 Apr 24 11:09 /usr/lib/news/ and since I'm running expire as root, this should work OK, right? Any suggestions? This is a pretty recent problem. Clayton E. Cramer ..!hplabs!pyramid!kontron!optilin!cramer

What kind of system are you running (optilink is not in the maps)? What patchlevel of news are you using? The first thing expire.c does at startup is basically setuid(NEWSUSR), so running as root does no harm (running expire as root is a bad idea: the point of the program is to delete lots of files, right?). How your setup ever worked isn't clear. -- James R. Van Artsdalen ...!ut-sally!utastro!bigtex!james "Live Free or Die" Home: 512-346-2444 Work: 328-0282; 110 Wild Basin Rd. Ste #230, Austin TX 78746
