[news.admin] USENET and Free Speech

gf@dasys1.UUCP (G Fitch) (05/18/88)

I gather not too many of you all believe in free speech.
OK, if you don't believe in free speech, what do you
believe in?

Oh, we all believe in free speech just fine. USENET speech, on the other hand,
is hideously expensive. :-(

(No, I don't need anyone to tell me how much this message cost.)

Free Speech is great. It allows you to say anything you choose to
however many hundred people will listen to you, so long as you don't
restrain them to listen to you.

Spending everyone else's money so you can say anything you please to 180,000
people is not free speech, it is theft. It is identical to someone making you
a collect phone call, and not allowing you to refuse it (such as if each of
the people with 976-xxxx numbers could go down the list of all people in the
US with a phone, call them, and charge anyone who answers $2. After thousands
of such charges per household...)

Anyone who does not like the setup on USENET is welcome to start their own
BBS or pay to use someone else's. I am disgusted by all the flames
directed at the people who are paying to provide a service to all of us.

I do beleive in free speech, but the net is not free! It cost a great
deal to people like myself who pay for the resources, and that cost
is spread out over the entire net. Every time some yahoo wants to pop
off it costs. If you want free speech take a soap box to the park!
