Interesting idea, a seperate binaries distribution. To get an idea of how such a thing would be taken, I ask interested news administrators to drop me a quick note. Tell me how willing you would be to carry such a set of groups and relay them to others. I'm especially interested in NNTP sites as they offer speedy and wide distribution. Depending on response, I may attempt to organize an effort to start a binaries distribution. Send mail to wisner@eddie.mit.edu or mit-eddie!wisner. ..b

What's the fuss. "comp.binaries" *is* a seperate binaries hierarchy. The amount of work in having sites put !comp.binaries.all in the relevent "sys" fies is far, far, far, far, far, far, far, far, far, far, far, far less than having a name change for a whole bunch of groups, and puting the new top level distribution in every sys file on the net that wants the groups. Unless 99% of the net doesn't want binaries. While many people don't want them, and almost everybody wants some control on them, and some would like an alternate (postal) distribution for them, I don't think that 99% don't want them. -- Brad Templeton, Looking Glass Software Ltd. - Waterloo, Ontario 519/884-7473
