[news.admin] Partial Bay Area News Topology

lmb@vsi1.UUCP (Larry Blair) (08/02/88)

The list has not grown since last month. I also only received 2 updates.
Many of the entries are out of date, so please send me updates. There are
a couple "baybone" sites not represented either.

Full leaves: None
Partial leaves:	optilin (1200, calls us) (Optilink, Petaluma CA)
tekbspa (1200, calls us) (Teknekron, Palo Alto CA)
Modems: dial-in: 1200 baud, possibly Trailblazer if I can get dial
		in/out sharing to work.
dial-out:	Trailblazer (PEP, 2400, 1200)
Room for fast leaves: Very possibly, depending on Trailblazer results
                       and a few other things.
Room for slow leaves: We're full until our existing leaves get Trailblazers.
Site tekbspa is waiting for 4.0 firmware, so they
should be fast soon. Site optilin seems to have just
received approval for Trailblazers, so they have a good
chance of being fast before long. The existing slow
leaves are both getting comp.* and a few local
favorites each, and still amount to 2-2.5 hours each
                       of phone time per night.

Quality of service: Creaky old Vax 750 with flaky disks, ancient 2.10.2
news software, mysteriously broken "expire", chronic
disk space problems, and hopelessly overworked system
administrator who must often try to fly this mess by
wire from Germany for weeks at a time. Administrator
(yours truly) is ill-disposed toward binaries and games,
and feels no remorse about laying waste to large volumes
of this garbage when push comes to shove (as it does
                       about once per week).
