Lets see how I can say this... A few days ago there was a post here and on news.config about 'Texans' posting too much and too often as configurations changed, or spelling changed, or whatever. I responded very angrily and basically went into flame mode. For flaming, I apologise. There were statements made in the original post that I still feel were out of line, but the part that really got to me was the implication that 'someone' should do something. I am one of those who had posted several updates about the system I administer, and I'm still not sure just what the limits are as to what I should post when, but I WILL respond if someone wants to open a dialogue (or let it lie, whichever feels better). I am not at all happy that I responded so vigorously on a public forum in any case, and for that I beg the collective pardon of the net.admin.folks. Thanks for your time. -- =============================================================================== | execu!dewey Dewey Henize @ Execucom Systems Corp 512/346-3008 | | You don't think my employer APPROVES of these ideas, do you?? Before the uucp maps existed, new sites would post an announcement in news.newsites announcing the site. news.config was used for announcements like "Our machine is down for a week", or "We are moving to another location" and the like. The state of the world a couple years ago was that sites were posting new site announcements and updated map entries to news.newsites, although the mapping project disavowed ever reading news.newsites. More, recently, map updates have started to appear in news.config with great regularity. To a great extent, posting a map entry to any of these groups currently has little effect on automated mail routing since most of the sites doing routing depend on comp.mail.maps for routing information. Postings to comp.mail.maps have gone through some filters and are watched closely by the mapping project for problems that can throw a wrench into the works. I think this is the main reason that routing sites depend on the moderated group rather than picking up the information automaticly from either news.newsites or news.config. Perhaps with this perspective in mind, we can make a judgement on the usefulness of posting frequent map updates to the news.all groups. -- Greg Laskin greg@gryphon.CTS.COM <any backbone site>!gryphon!greg
