[news.admin] Portal Potty

) (09/23/88)

An interesting aside... One of my accounts is on The Well, which
is a public access unix system (well!dansmith). Whenever I see a posting
on the net from the Well, it is usually well thought out, informative,
or at least amusing. I think us net.users can agree on that. I
tried the Portal for a month a while back, and was not impressed.
I don't remember seeing anything saying "you should read this before
making a posting". Perhaps such articles were around, but my point
is that the way their system is set up, it didn't seem like the
admins there were going out of their way to teach netiquette. If
I'm wrong I'm sure I'll hear about it.

The main thing I want to say is that it is not the facet of
"public access" that seems to work against what the rest of the net
thinks of that site, it's the lack of responsibility on the part
of the administration of The Portal that shows. I think it's
important to bear that in mind. The Well is making a profit too,
but yet it is much better run. Just my two sense...
