[news.admin] Dealing with Net.Nuisances

mack@inco.UUCP (Dave Mack) (09/22/88)

Lately, there has been rather a lot of complaining about the behavior
of people (particularly Portal subscribers) on the net. Suggestions
for dealing with these people have ranged from simply ignoring them
to nuking Portal.

The general consensus seems to be that the problem is that
they have not been educated in proper netiquette, and that it is
the responsibility of their site administrators to provide this
education. Unfortunately, many site admins don't seem to give a
damn.

I suggest that, instead of flaming them or posting complaints to
the net, we simply email these people a copy of the appropriate
newuser posting when they do something aggravating. Eventually,
they may get the idea.

Even the most immature dweeb on the net may eventually
turn into a valuable member of the net.community. Let's
try educating them. If it doesn't work, we can always
get out the chainsaws later.

I actually for some reason took it upon myself to send excerpts from
the "rules" and "guidelines" to two of the worst alt.flame offenders.
I received polite notes from both in response, with a statement of
intent from one to follow them. I haven't seen anything from him
since.
