[news.admin] If you cut distribution on groups, please announce it

brad@looking.UUCP (Brad Templeton) (09/27/88)

Recently some sites have decided to shut off "ALT" groups in various
sections of the net.

I know this because alt.sex stopped arriving here over a month ago, and
about 1.5 weeks ago, alt.individualism and other alt groups stopped.

(Oddly enough, the cutting is one-way. Postings from here make it out,
but nothing comes back.)

While it is up to every site to decide what groups to feed, I would ask
that sites doing this cutting please announce it in all the groups being
cut, at the least in the areas being cut.

In the end, you will reduce the traffic caused by people being confused.
You will also allow people to arrange alternate paths.

I would ask all sites to send to their downstream neighbors MAIL that they
are no longer carrying whichever groups they decide not to carry. This would
keep unnecessary and uninteresting traffic from cluttering up many newsgroups.

It's not really of any concern to me that your next site neighbor isn't
sending you alt groups (unless, of course, your next site neighbor
is uunet :-))
