Greetings once again: Here are the entries from the history.d dir that show the articles generated when I opened the window of the bug hotel. Unfortunately these articles do not exist on our system any more, since they have been expired here. Number 111 seems to have come back home tho, so I tried cancelling it again. <108@microsoft 25144,1,1.UUCP> 09/29/88 23:04 misc.test/2477 <109@microsoft 25144,1,1.UUCP> 09/30/88 17:30 soc.motss/8024 <110@microsoft 25144,1,1.UUCP> 09/30/88 18:15 rec.games.hack/2734 <111@microsoft 25144,1,1.UUCP> 09/30/88 20:18 sci.space.shuttle/1242 If everyone will kill these on their system, the virus can be destroyed everywhere at once, and be removed from the net permanently. It seems that there is no quick or standard innoculation, and only certain systems are susceptable to it. I have been doing a lot of calling and mailing, and so far have come up with no particular pattern involving the virus' spread. Is there anyone out there from the centre for disease control with experience in tracking down plagues? No one locally has the disease, and there was plenty of exposure. Obviously the problem is the tab. I believe that future versions should check the id, and perhaps the entire header, and reject if not conforming to standards. It is too easy for someone to generate bad headers accidentally, and the possibility of someone doing so inten- tionally is frightening. Especially with many nasty people out there. Anybody care to experiment with generating other non-standard headers and checking the results? Any volunteers should check into puchasing a shuttle-tile mailbox. Speaking of mailboxes: To those people who tried to help, and approached things calmly, THANKS! Those people who flamed before they had any idea as to what was going on, or it's extent, I would rather not discuss. Once again, sorry to all affected, and thanks to all who have been keeping their heads and trying to figure out what is going on. I think there will be major things changing due to this, so let's all pull together and make them happen. Remember, USENET is based on only one principle: cooperation. Anything else is destructive. ...uunet!microsoft!brentp
