Just for your information, Erik Fair wrote some code in nrecnews to fix just this problem. It should probably be stolen and used. It simply replaces spaces and tabs with periods. Part of the problem is that there are contradictory standards. RFC822 allows white space (in a quoted pair or quoted string) while RFC1036 doesn't, and so mail dumped from certain mailers into the news system may legitimately have white space (upon entrance, not exit). -- Eliot Lear [lear@net.bio.net]
