I finally got tired of the slowness of my 386 (running Microport) when processing news. One of the steps I took was to make inews use /usr/tmp instead of /tmp for unbatching and lock files. This puts them on the same file system as the spool directory, which cuts down on the amount of seeking. Now, the question is this: the inode loss problem occurs when one creates a large number of files without doing any deleting, right? If so, then doesn't my change also eliminate the problem? And while I'm at it, does anyone have any other suggestions for speeding up news processing? --- Bill {uunet|novavax}!proxftl!twwells!bill
