I just found "comp.lang.sigplan" on my system and removed it, and am not accepting or forwarding articles in it (you add ",!comp.lang.sigplan" to your own hostname's sys entry). > This is a moderated bulletin board for use by ACM's SIGPLAN... > Other official notices may be posted at the discretion of the officers. It looks to me like straight advertising for ACM products. While plenty of vendors have newsgroups (eg. comp.sys.*), they are newsgroups designed for users to talk with each other. The sigplan newsgroup is designed for them to advertise conferences, magazines, and memberships. No feedback from users seems to be contemplated. > Reading this is no substitute for reading _SIGPLAN_Notices_ > regularly. Do part with your $22 and join SIGPLAN. > Of course this is the ACM members' price; so do join ACM, as well. So far most of the messages in the group have Expires: lines -- the moderator would rather that *he* decide how long the article sits on your disk. > Postings here will usually be delayed until Snail Mail > has reached our paid membership. Also, they decided to "delay" posting things to the newsgroup until after their paying members have had time to receive the listings via pony express. Not only do they send us advertising at our own expense, and keep it on our disk excessively long, but by the time we receive it, its time value has declined to the point where they feel comfortable "throwing it away" to the Usenet. > Subject: Welcome to SIGPLAN's Bulletin Board No thanks, SIGPLAN. Peddle your half-hearted attempts to 'go electronic' on other nets where commercialism is the rule, where the marks know they are marks and expect to be treated this way. -- John Gilmore {sun, pacbell, uunet, pyramid, amdahl}!hoptoad!gnu gnu@toad.com Love your country but never trust its government. -- from a hand-painted road sign in central Pennsylvania
