[news.admin] Questions about sys file

notes@sts.sts.com (02/10/89)

Why would anyone want a copy of someone else's /usr/lib/news/sys
file? I'm pretty new to this game of administering news and I don't
have a clue.

Also, even though I don't subscribe to "chi" or "nj" newsgroups, I still
get them. I was under the impression that, unless "chi" or "nj" are
in the /usr/lib/news/sys file, one would NOT receive them. So, any ideas
about what's happening here?

Thanks ... (e-mail or post at your discretion)

In case anyone else is interested, here is the answer I got. It sounds
to me like a poll of who's rmgroup'ed a newsgroups and who hasn't.
Thanks, Brian.

Sometimes people want to examine other peoples sys files to
check the distribution of a newgroup and find out why it may
not be reaching everywhere.

Actually, the newgroups you receive are controlled by your neighboring
sites sys files, which is one reason you might want to look at them.
I'm not sending you "chi" or "nj", but one of your other newsfeeds
might be. The line in your sys file for your site controls which
newgroups are stored on your machine, but not which newgroups are
received by it. Also, when a news article is crossposted to a
group that you do receive and a group that you don't, you still
receive the article. Someone could post to "rec.misc" and "nj.misc",
for instance, and you would receive it because you receive rec.misc.
Hope this helps.
