After I installed the new WIN release my system has started creating the new news directories with different permissions. Before the new release, the permissions were read/write for everyone. On the new release, the permissions are read/write for owner (root), and just read for other. This seems fine except for the owner of the newsgroups. Why are the new directories owned by root? -- Gordon Edwards << N4VPH >> NCR Corporation gordon.edwards@Atlanta.NCR.COM 5555 Oakbrook Parkway uunet!ncrlnk!ncratl!edwards Suite 140 Norcross, GA 30093

I was having similar permission problems under uucp-based news,
except that it was sometimes 755 uucp or 755 news. A cron script
running with Expire fixed that. Until our newsfeed went away, we
ran 777-permission news directories - this has the minor
disadvantage that individuals can go delete or modify articles, but
it never happened, and made it easier to fix broken stuff.
