[net.unix-wizards] UNIX Database Systems

biringer@ANL-MCS.arpa (Dennis Biringer) (11/01/86)

We're getting ready to install a new Masscomp 5700 system and plan
on installing a commercial DBMS on it. The systems we are investigating
are:

	EMPRESS/32
	UNIFY
	ORACLE
	LOGIX
	INGRES
	INFORMIX

The system will be used to manage a large number of instrumentation
readings, calibration data, image and graphics data. Any feedback
on these systems, on a Masscomp or other UNIX system, would be
greatly appreciated. Please mail responses to:

	dkb-amos@HAWAII-EMH
		or
	biringer@anl-mcs

Thanks in advance.

Don't purchase UNIFY if you will be adding time or date+time. It
doesn't handle it gracefully and you will have to write an external
procedure to do the dirty work for you (use ctime). It also doesn't
deal with seconds or fractions of seconds directly.

I use UNIFY a lot and it is nice except for that feature. It is also
easy to setup input and reports/output. Also, the B-Tree editor is a
great asset.
