There seems to be much recent interest on forming newsgroups for discussions about various countries. In addition to the following existing newsgroups, soc.culture.china, soc.culture.greek, soc.culture.indian, soc.culture.japan and the recently formed soc.culture.hongkong, there are proposals for groups on Taiwan and Iran. Before proposing another national newsgroup, and in the light of recent discussions on whether Hong Kong / Taiwanese culture is really different from Chinese culture in general, I'd like to suggest a new sub-tree, soc.nation.* (other naming suggestions welcome) in which newsgroups with the general charter "for discussions pertaining to <country> and <inhabitants of that country> including but not necessarily limited to society, economy, culture, politics, international relations, etc." can be formed. New groups which fit this description would be formed in this sub-tree and new groups similar to soc.culture.jewish or soc.culture.asian.american (ie. not pertaining to any particular nation) would be formed under soc.culture. Existing groups could continue in soc.culture unless they wish to move to the new sub-tree. Comments? Gihan <dias@iris.ucdavis.edu>, <...!ucbvax!ucdavis!gdias>

This would not make any difference and would cause some difficulty for groups which are not countries. It's better to leave "culture" a vague term that encompasses many different topics. -- ==================================================================== ARPA: cew@venera.isi.edu PHONE: (213)822-1511 ext. 111 USPS: USC Information Sciences Institute 4676 Admiralty Way, Suite 1100 Marina del Rey, CA 90292 Slogan: "nemo me impune lacessit" ====================================================================
