[Read this to the end before replying or flaming] *********************************************** Having followed a number of groups for quite some time, it occurs to me that many of the topics covered are very nationalistic, this is especially true in the rec. and soc. groups. For example, in rec.ham-radio there has been a long discussion regarding the need for a morse requirement on the test - a perfectly valid topic - but unfortunately outside the United States it is not that interesting, or relevant - what started out as signal has degraded to noise. The classic "Car for sale in Bay area" is another example. A possible way out of this would be to set the default distribution for the soc. and rec. groups to be "continent" (or equiv), and a submitor would have to deliberatly expand the distribution to "world". This shouldn't be viewed as a restriction on your freedom to post, but more as a way making sure that you hit a relevant audience. From the Reader's point of view it would be increasing the chance of reading something that was relevant to her/him. It would probably be better not to apply this rule to the comp groups. How many people even bother thinking about "distribution" ? Would we loose more than we would gain ? Constructive thoughts ?
