For new UUCP and Usenet administrators, I recommend the Nutshell Handbook MANAGING UUCP AND USENET, from O'Reilly and Associates. They really cover the ground. For more information mail to uunet!ora!nuts. I have no affiliation with them except as a satisfied customer. -- 'We have luck only with women -- \\\ Tom Neff not spacecraft!' *-((O tneff@bfmny0.UU.NET -- R. I've recently been put in charge of news administration at our site, and don't really know that much about how to go about it. There are quite a few others around the net in the same boat - so if anyone could give me/us some handy- hints on what to do and what not to do, I/we'd really appreciate it. A few specific questions though for any inews gurus out there: What does inews do when I create a local group?. Does it create the relevant /usr/spool/news/... directory? (if so, why doesn't mine?). When do control messages get processed?. What causes checkgroups messages to be sent out? How do I avoid doing this, particularly if it affects other sites?. How do I select which newsgroups I do, and which ones I don't want to receive?. Has anyone got a "beginners guide to news administration" type doc they could send me?. I've been a newsreader for over 1 year, so I'm very familiar with it from a user's point of view; but don't know what goes on behind the scenes. Any help greatly appreciated, Greyham. -- /* Greyham Stoney: +61 2 428 6476 <- yes; that's a phone number! * * greyham@hades.oz - Ausonics Pty Ltd, Lane Cove, Sydney, Oz. * * TDMP/IP: Telepathic Direct Marketing Personel Interface Protocol */

You probably want to get "Managing UUCP and Usenet" from O'Reilly &
Associates. This has lots of good information in it. You can send
them e-mail at uunet!ora!nuts.
