USENET FLOW ANALYSIS REPORT for OCT 89 This is the first article in a monthly posting series from the Network Measurement Project at the DEC Western Research Laboratory in Palo Alto, California. Textual articles in the series are posted to news.lists, and PostScript map files are posted to news.misc. In past months the map files have been posted to various other newsgroups, but invariably there were bitter complaints from somebody. If I have to move them out of news.misc because of any more bitter complaints, I'm going to put them in alt.restaurants. This flow analysis is based on a sample of data taken from 246 USENET sites. The sampling program was run voluntarily by the site administrators. It analyzed the contents of the news spooling directory and mailed a summary of what it found to the analysis mailbox at decwrl.dec.com. There the data is converted into a per-day flow rate, the flow information was combined together, and the resulting aggregate flows used to produce maps. The maps are all PostScript files. They can be printed on any PostScript printer and on many PostScript-compatible printers. They use features of PostScript that cannot be translated into most other page description schemes, such as HPGL. The PostScript map files are all transmitted in multiple parts, and there is an accompanying Makefile. To produce printable files, just assemble the various parts and the Makefile together in a directory and type "make". The following sites have contributed data. If you would like to contribute data from your site, please copy the program "inpaths" from a companion posting, install it, and run it at intervals. Ideally we would like you to run it once a month, to keep our data fresh.
