Once again, I repeat my question: Am I the only one having problems
with Eliot Lear's checkgroups messages ??

Regularly, when they come, I receive as news admin a mail telling me
how corrupt my active file is (basically, no comp.* etc. group is
valid) and advising me to rmgroup all these groups. Of course, I don't
obey, but the problem is that my /usr/lib/news/newsgroups is getting
completely wrong this way. I have to wait for the next monthly general
checkgroups (sent from cwi here in Europe) to get a valid newsgroups
file again. This is a bit disturbing as I provide access to this
newsgroups file to users here, through a help interface, for knowing
what's in the different newsgroups.

Does the problem come from Eliot Lear's checkgroup message or from my
version of Bnews 2.11 (some beta version, I admit) ?

And yes, honest, update of our Bnews software is on my TODO list.

We (OK, I) recently subjected the Michigan distribution to the same
sort of checkgrouping. The results were fascinating. Some sites,
including 2.11.14 and earlier, got boatloads of messages saying they
had spurious groups -- all groups besides mi.*. Others got empty
messages with the subject "invalid groups" or something similar.
Up-to-date Bnews and Cnews sites got proper messages. So the problem
is definately the news software levels.

I plan to send the mi checkgroups message quarterly, and am looking
for a way to include 'extra' text in it so I can let those behind-
the-times sysadms know what's going on.

I'm not sure. I'm running the latest patchlevel of Cnews and each
time I get one of those bionet.* checkgroup messages I get a message
telling me to remove all my non-bionet groups. I asked Mr. Lear about
it and he said my news software was not set up/working correctly. Is
anyone running the current (jan 18, I believe) version of Cnews and
not having these problems?

Whoops! I take that all back. David Lawrence just pointed out to me
that you only get messages for groups that aren't in $NEWSCTL/newsgroups.
I have nothing in my newsgroups file due to the fact that I just switched
over from Bnews and didn't copy that file over.

Sorry about that.

In fairness, it should also be mentioned that C News's checkgroups is
buggy and needs work. One of us will get to it eventually.
