The Ohio State University Computer Science Department VAX (osu-eddie)
will be down much of next week, beginning Monday, December 8 around
8:00 AM, until the raised floor installers are finished.
This means that news and mail traffic to
osu-cgrg, apr, chemabs, bgsuvax, sppy00, mcorp, and dsacg1
may be interrupted, unless some quick action is taken by folks at
those sites. Sorry about the *extremely* short notice, but until
about lunchtime today I thought we would be able to replace Eddie with
another machine (not located in the same room, but answering the same
phone) temporarily impersonating him, and nobody would notice. This
seems not to be the case, because of a lot of problems you don't
really want to hear about.
Thanks to Mark Horton at cbatt and Jay Towslee at osupyr for some
short-notice, short-term solutions that may bail us all out (and save
me personally a lot of grief and embarrassment). Jay (osupyr) has
offered to pick up all of Eddie's news feeds from now until Eddie is
healthy and answering the phone again. We won't stop feeding from
Eddie except when Eddie is down, and Mark (cbatt) will temporarily
feed both of us, so you can leave all your UUCP and news references to
Eddie intact.
Because of other problems you don't really want to hear about
regarding OSU's mid-transition state with networks and domains and
etc., osupyr can't pass mail right now. Sorry, but that's all we can
do for now.
If you are connected with UUCP and Usenet administration at any of the
above sites, please take note: You can reach osupyr with a line in
your L.Sys that looks a lot like:
osupyr Any ACU 1200 2923070 Name \dpyramid\r RETURN \c GO \d\r\d\r login: YOUR-LOGIN ssword: YOUR-PASSWORD
You will need to contact Jay at (614)292-5355 and discuss what
YOUR-LOGIN and YOUR-PASSWORD will be, and to add each other to your
respective /usr/lib/news/sys and /usr/lib/uucp/L.sys files, etc.
If you are unconnected with UUCP and Usenet administration at your
site, still please be aware that osu-eddie will be off the air for a
while, and that service to the sites we normally feed (listed above)
may be interrupted news-wise, and will be non-existent mail-wise.
If you have any questions about this, please don't hesitate to call
me. Again, please accept my apologies for the short notice, and
thanks for your cooperation.
