Thanx all who responded to my inquiry about the how's and should's of admins monitoring outbound news. And I wish to apologize for the confusing subject line which mistakenly mentioned monitoring mail instead of news (Freudian slip?). For the record, I did not receive one response from remote sites against monitoring outbound news. In fact, everyone thought it was my responsibility as sysadmin to do this. Some users at my site disagree. Their arguments seemed to stem from 1) The assumption that they had some sort of right to privacy on the machine (and I/they mean that in an absolute sense, not out of courtesy) 2) The assumption that I am being paranoid.
