I need some help here. Somehow or other I got saddled with the job of trying to come up with some sort of policy on students posting to USENET. Obviously the easiest thing to do is find out what other sites are doing, sift through the responses and come up with a viable plan. So that's what I'm doing, what is your site's policy on student access to the net? What do you do in cases of possible abuse, obnoxious posters (ala Eric Mading, etc)? Before we let our students loose on the net, we need and want some sort of guidelines and rules to enforce on students if they get "out of line." We do not want an Eric Mading type coming out of UCSC, and based out what I've seen here at UCSC, this is very likely, a little too likely for the administration's taste. Also, the machine that these students use is on very shaky ground as it is with the administration and dumping a possible ~1100 accounts on USENET and having themselves make fools of themselves is not very good for the users or their net access. The machine that we have is a very nice one with few restrcitions on time or usage and is one that allows the students to learn a lot about, computers, both Unix and in general. USENET helps contribute to this a great deal because of the wealth of information available on it. Please e-mail responses to me at the addresses below, should you not be able to reach them, then feel free to post to the net, as other administrators may find this information useful. (I'm not the news adminstrator for our site, but mereley a student who is very interested in USENET and getting better access for my fellow students.)
