[news.sysadmin] Other SCO '386 "news" users?

tyager@mkunix.UUCP (Tom Yager) (01/05/88)

I'd like to start a dialogue with other users running the netnews
software under SCO Xenix for the 80386. I'm having various problems, not
the least of which is the fact that when uux calls up 'rnews', my system
goes nuts: the hard drive starts seeking almost constantly, and no other
user can get any better than 30-45 second response time. This doesn't
seem to happen when I run 'rnews' manually, but I'd really like to know
what's going on.

All offers of assistance accepted and appreciated. Thanks, all.

I am inclined to think the problem may lie with your configuration;
I'm running SCO XENIX 386 and news (albeit on a relatively unloaded
system) without any such problem. How much memory is on your system,
how much disk, how many users are there when this happens, and what
are they typically doing?

I'm inclined to agree with you, Steve, but the only copy of the netnews
sources I had available had already been doctored for another CPU. Is it
possible we could arrange (at my expense, of course) to get some 1.2Mb
'tar' disks containing your _working_ netnews software? I know it's a
lot to ask, but I really don't have the spare time to fuss with this; I
just want to get news working. Here's the stats on my system:
  16MHz 80386, 4Mb memory, 90Mb hard disk (70 + 20), 2 users tops.
I had it set up to dial into the feed site in early a.m. when there were
NO users on the system, no significant jobs except for the news uucp.
The uuxqt of 'rnews' just drives my system nuts (as I mentioned). Any &
all help appreciated. Thanks! (TY)
