[news.sysadmin] Cracker alert!

era@killer.UUCP (Mark E. Smith) (01/12/88)

I loggedin to chinet a little while ago, and found that somebody had
created an account in my name, using my previous login.

I wrote to Randy Suess and Dave Ihnat, asking them to remove the
phony account, but I don't know what damage will be done before
they see it.

My previous account used the login "reason." It was removed by
Randy, and the new account has a new password. I tried, but was unable
to access it. I had also removed my .plan, using the paranoid person
function, after Mark Sunderlin had posted my .plan to the net. The
new account has an unprotected .plan, using my name and phone number.

My new accounton chinet uses the login era, same as I use here.
If you see anything posted between January 11th and whenever Randy
or Dave get around to removing that account, purporting to be from
me, using the login reason@chinet, please cancel it, if you have
root privileges, or ignore it if you are not responsible. I have
not posted from chinet, since it is easier for me to post from
killer, dasys1, or violet.berkeley.edu. The 312 PCP port is usually
busy.
