I just got two checkgroup control messages from alberta!altel!root. The second one specified to remove all active groups. I can't find site altel in the maps. Anybody know whats going on? -- Ken Davis - Letterman Army Medical Center - San Francisco, CA {ihnp4,lll-crg,ames,pyramid}!pacbell!lamc!kdavis kdavis@optimis-pent.arpa

altel!root posted his checkgroups messages very sloppily. He attempted to limit distribution, but bungled it. Now, listen up, kids: THERE MUST BE A SPACE BETWEEN THE HEADER FIELD AND THE TEXT OF THE HEADER! For example, our friend at altel should have said: Distribution: altel Instead, he did this: Distribution:altel There is a REASON that every news-related program in existence puts a space after every header field. It is because the news software REQUIRES that space before it will be recognized as a proper header. Lecture done. Take this soapbox outta here, Guido. Everyone else should just ignore the output generated by those checkgroups messages. ..b

I hope we can relax this in news 3.0 and/or Cnews. For compatibility
inews would have to massage the headers to add the spaces, but clearly
making humans slaves to the software's inadequacies isn't the way to go.
Time to mung the news source to ignore checkgroups messages...

If you check the headers on the control message you will see: Distribution:local They've been notified of the problem. Just another new site coming on stream :-) -- lyndon {alberta, uunet}!ncc!lyndon lyndon%ncc@uunet.uu.net

I also got these; they had a 'Distribution: altel' in the header, so were meant for local distribution only. One problem is how they got out of altel - root@altel should check his sys file(s). But a bigger problem is that once they did, they went everywhere; looks like news 2.11 interpret an unknown distribution as 'none', and since no distribution means 'world', that's where they went! -- Amos Shapir (My other cpu is a NS32532) National Semiconductor (Israel) 6 Maskit st.
