[news.sysadmin] Why do my expires take so long to run?

dan@lclark.UUCP (Dan Revel) (04/14/88)

My crontab executes a shell script at midnight and it takes 15 hours to
expire everything (VAX 750/4.3bsd, load average < 3.00). This just doesn't
seem right, does it?
The source has an sccs version # 2.47 and is dated 10/23/86 (expire.c).
My shell script looks something like this [my edits in []'s]:

/usr/lib/news/expire -e 7 -E 28 -I -n alt.aquaria [many newsgroups follow]
[ 20 similar lines ]
/usr/lib/news/expire -e 14 -E 28 -I -n test

Even the last expire takes 26 minutes, any ideas about what's going on,
or what I can do to speed things up?

Thanks in advance,

Your best bet might be to use the cnews expire. It's faster and mroe
flexible. Diffs to allow this were posted several times.
