[news.sysadmin] PORTAL CHANGES ITS POLICIES!

allen@sulaco.UUCP (Allen Gwinn) (09/27/88)

As most of you realize, there has been a group of us actively involved in
pointing out what we have felt were administrative deficiencies at the
Portal System (tm) in California. Aside from the "mass-posting", some
of us have been in contact directly with the system management at Portal.

Last Friday, I got a phone call from Mr. John Little, President, Portal
Communications. He informed me that Portal has begun some rather significant
changes. They are going to begin placing their poster's REAL name (along with
other information) in the article header thus eliminating their problem with
"pseudo" abuse. After this change is in place, the recent administrative
sanctions imposed last week, will be lifted. They are also putting into
place, a procedure for more closer monitoring of Usenet postings (especially
by new users). In addition, they are going to begin to establish email
connections with other net sites (killer and sulaco will both be connected
shortly). They have also agreed to provide news feeds to other sites
downline from them.

During the course of my discussions with John Little, I found him to be
a very reasonable person, and highly interested in the impact of his system
on Usenet. I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank him for
his cooperation in this matter. In addition, I would like to thank everyone
who has taken an active participation (and even those who just sent letters
of support). I would further like to appologize to those people who have
felt inconvenienced and offended during the course of events. This was
never our intent.

Once again, thanks again.
