[news.sysadmin] Maybe NSA did it

john@anasaz.UUCP (John Moore) (11/07/88)

I'm not usually one for conspiracy theories, but is it possible that
NSA (or the National Computer Security Center [or whatever it's called])
put Mr. Morris up to it? The connection is far from subtle! A relatively
harmless virus is certainly one way to get attention to a potentially
far more serious problem that NSA has been complaining about for quite
a while.

A personal note: once upon a long time (19 years) ago I was a young
hacker at University of Kansas. Poked a hole in GECOS-III and, looking for
a way to leave my spoor, changed the BCD system date to a name. This
screwed up payroll and got me in trouble, but nothing terrible happened
to me. If Mr. Morris wasn't put up to his tricks by NSA, I suspect he
was a more modern version of myself (or many of us here on the net). I
was stupid to do it, but learned my lesson and have since had a
productive career in systems work. I hope Mr. Morris doesn't get
clobbered too badly - he obviously didn't have malicous intent
or there would be a lot of sites with no files left by now!

The opinions expressed here are obviously not mine, so they must be
someone else's. :-)

Hmm, just as a side note, isn't Bob Morris' father _the_ rather famous
Morris who has done quite a bit of computer security work (perhaps NSA?).

I've heard of stupider things -- the bombing of Laos & Cambodia...

Will we see new books in the coming years 'ARPAgate: Ollie North cleans up
those lax University bozos...'
