[news.sysadmin] Cost of Morris' Worm

erik@naggum.se (Erik Naggum) (11/10/88)

Paying for a lot of news trafficking through our system here,
I can't fail to think of the

	cost of news transmission

resulting from Morris' worm and the ensuing discussions.

A few $$ for each netnews site sure adds up to quite an amount.
I suppose this is a cost that will hurt non-Internet sites more
than Internet sites. So Robert Morris,jr has cost _me_ an
unnecessary increase in my phone bill. Thanks!

Oh, come on! You also cost _my company_ an unnecessary increase in their
phone bill by posting this message, I cost _you_ an increase, every
article you read and don't like may be an unnecessary increase, ...

But: This is the cost of information. It does not depend on who causes
it. If you want to be informed then you have to pay for it.

You also could say that Mr. Morris has costed the newspaper readers money
because there were many articles about his worm in most magazines.

Your statement is _very_ narrow eyed. I for myself don't think it was wasted
money to follow the discussion about the worm and Mr. Morris, because
I could get more information on the security of the net and the way
how people think about it than i had gotten in years elswhile.

So if you don't want to have information you propably don't want, simply
unsuscribe to news, but don't blame Mr. Morris for you being not interested
in the subject.
