[news.sysadmin] Max # of newsgroups

waynec@tektronix.TEK.COM (Wayne Clark) (11/11/88)

I know this has been discussed before, but my memory seems to be failing.

What are the factors limiting the number of newsgroups, and how hard/easy
would it be to increase the limit. I'm running 2.11 news at patch level 14

In src/defs.h:

#define LINES 512 /* maximum no. of lines in .newsrc */

Ours was knocked up to 1024 a long, long time ago. A trivial change,
recompile and re-install.

I'd like to point out that 16-bit machines have a hard time when the number
of newsgroups gets near 400. Your mileage may vary, of course. Although
most of us are comfortably ensconced on 32-bit machines now, I just checked
and found 101 PDP-11s listed in the uucp map.
