[news.sysadmin] Jon Caroll's SF Chronicle column

rsalz@bbn.com (Rich Salz) (11/22/88)

When I slammed David Hawkins for posting Jon's article, I used the
portentuous wording that "this is a violation of US copyright law." It
turns out that while my note was generally correct, in this specific case
I was wrong; the Chronicle has only "first rights," and after they publish
it Jon can do anything he wants with it -- including posting it to the
net. This practice is not uncommon for periodicals such as newspapers.

If you are going to post a copyright work to the net, check with the
author, or the person who published it, to make sure that it's okay. It
might, or might not be.

Apologies to David and Jon. I consider myself fairly well-read on the
subject, but this one caught me totally flat-footed.
