[news.sysadmin] Why all this junk?

rg@psgdc (Dick Gill) (04/01/89)

I am (he said hopefully), in the final stages of getting news running
on our NCR Tower 32/600 through uunet. Most aspects seem to work OK,
including the basic news software and rn. Examination of the news
log, however, shows that some articles are bouncing into junk for
reasons I don't understand. Specifically, the following four errors
seem to re-occur:

1. Unknown newsgroup comp.unix.aux not localized

This newsgroup is not in my "active" file. Does the system update
my active file automatically or do I have to do it manually (through
Checkgroups?)?

2. Cannot install article as /usr/acct/spool/news/comp/bugs/sys5/661:
   Permission denied

The permissions for this directory, which was established by the news
software, are:

	drwxrwxr-x 2 uucp 32 Feb 22 18:18 sys5

Is this an ownership problem? The crontab entries to pick-up news all
belong to "news"; how come uucp owns the directory?

3. Newsgroups in active, but not sys

Although the newsgroup is in the "active" file, the system did not
set-up an entry for it in the news directory. Why not? (Permissions
seem OK at the news directory level.)

4. Cannot mkdir /usr/acct/spool/news/comp/sys/ridge: Not a typewriter

This one has me baffled.

I will be grateful for any help. Mail is fine; I will post responses
if there is interest. Thanks
