Who are the backbone sites? Is there a list that is kept up-to-date?

For a practical list (useful in a mailpaths file), see
<6192@medusa.cs.purdue.edu> in news.lists and news.admin. It is
updated periodically by the magic backbone-list faeries, impersonating
Gene Spafford of Purdue.

For a political list (useful when accusing a Backbone Cabal member of
fascism), there's no such thing any more :-)
