[news.sysadmin] Problems with rrn/nntpd; any ideas?

tpc@bnr-fos.UUCP (Tom Chmara) (06/01/89)

rrn (patchlevel 39) has been exhibiting somewhat bizarre behaviour on at least
one user's behalf lately. This behaviour is most evident when using the ^N
(i.e. control-N) feature to follow subject threads. The symptoms are:

a) articles are displayed with the wrong article #; the "=" list of subject/
    # pairs are correct for the first n (n ~ 30), then we get errors...

b) when using "^N", rn tells you the current article's subject is the "SAME",
though the articles are in no way related.

The problem usually appears when reading newsgroups with many unread messages
(on the order of 200). comp.unix.wizards seems to be a favourite.

This behaviour was brought to my attention about a week after I installed
an nntp 1.5 server with patches 1-4 installed (replacing one with only patch
1). A quick survey of my clients indicated that the behaviour had been noticed
before, but seems to be worse now (with the patched software). Note that the
clients are still running the old (patch 1) client software, though this
apparently only affects *postings*. The clients are currently in the process
of upgrading, though I am not expecting this to help the current situation.

The problems have been arising with Sun 3/60 systems, all running either
SunOS 4.0 or 4.0.1. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for your time...
