[net.lang.lisp] LISP for 2.8/2.9bsd

Having a spare 11/44 lying around, we are contemplating using the
machine as an AI laboratory of sorts. When the idea was brought
up I balked at it because: 1) Franz Lisp runs slow enough on the
11/780 here, and 2) I am not aware that a decent implementation of
LISP exists for the 11/44 under Berkeley 2.9.

Hence my questions are:
	1) What flavors of LISP are available for Berkeley 2.9 Unix
	on a PDP-11/44 with 512K of memory and separate I & D?
	2) Is a scaled-down version of Franz Lisp distributed with
	2.9bsd?
	3) What are your experiences, good and bad, with any
	implementations of LISP on PDP-11's?

I appreciate any responses.

If you get desparate, you can always run the new, improved version of good
old AM110 LISP (L110 on some machines). Quite frankly, it is awful, but
for years it was the only Lisp to run on 11s; I still see it in the
damndest places...

P.S. If you really want a copy, I can send you one (Yes, source code too!).

The LISP distributed with 2.8BSD (can't speak for 2.9) is, in fact,
L110 from Harvard. I know--I gave it to Bob Kridle way back when.
As you say, it barely qualifies as LISP these days, being strictly
stone-age LISP 1.5.

Gohd, I remember people trying to *use* that `stone-age' lisp on the
Cory Hall 11/70 while I was part of the staff there. I particularly
remember there was this really insane student who wanted to re-write
the thing for speed, rather than portability. He was going to hack the
commonly used portions from lisp into macro-11 (which the lower levels
were already written in). But then, he was also working part time for
CDC as a NOS and NOS/BE hacker...

Aw, c'mon. Stop making fun of L110 ... after all, is there a *better* LISP
for a PDP11? Let's here it out there, net land!
