[news.sysadmin] B news under A/UX 2.0

barker@wd0gol.WD0GOL.MN.ORG (Bob Barker) (07/24/90)

I'm trying to get B news 2.11.18 running on a Macintosh IIcx that was
just upgraded to A/UX 2.0 from 1.0. News was working just fine under
1.0, but after the upgrade things stopped working - specifically
inews/rnews. I recompiled and installed everything to no avail.

The symptoms are that the hourly unbatching of news via rnews -U
gives "inbound news is garbled batch saved in /usr/spool/news/.bad/xxx"
where xxx is some part of the name of the batch in SPOOLDIR/.rnews
but not the full name. The batches are not removed from SPOOLDIR/.rnews
and the articles are not unpacked into the spool directory anywhere.
The batches in SPOOLDIR/.rnews are valid.

I'm guessing that it has something to do with changes to the filesystem
that are part of A/UX 2.0 but I'm not sure. I've tried compiling both
with and without DIRENT defined. With it defined, rnews -U just hangs
(doesn't use CPU time, just sits there).

If anybody has gotten 2.11.?? running under A/UX 2.0 I'd love to hear
from you. If its a matter of having the right localize.sh or if a patch
is necessary, please send it. I'm beginning to tear my hair out!!!

Thanks!

-Bob
