[news.sysadmin] what freely available tools are of most benefit to you?

daniel@island.COM (Dan Smith) (01/01/91)

Hi, this is a sort of informal survey....

What freely available tools (like PERL, PBM, etc.) would you
say are of most value to you in accomplishing system administration
tasks? In other words, tools that did not come with the release tapes
for your machine...things that you picked up from {alt,comp}.sources.*.

I expect perl to be heading up the list, and I imagine that
some of you that are sysadmins point out the availability of the PBM
suite over and over to your users. What else helps you get your job
done? Also, if you care to take the time to add a few lines, what
freely available tools do you like for program devlopment (the mkid
package I would not want to live without!)? Thanks much for your
emailed input.

				Daniel

p.s. Me too people/other curious system people, drop me a line and
I'll email you what I get (must caution though, that it's the beginning
of the year and I have a lot of catching up to do, so it could be
a couple of weeks.)

Could we continue with the petty bickering? I find it most intriguing-Data:TNG
