[news.software.b] news 2.11 - Patch.1 -vnews

root@tmmnet.UUCP (Thomas M. Marshall, Esq. - tmmnet ltd.) (12/05/86)

Another test!

Patch.1 for news 2.11 was duly applied to the source files of the
sources. The very first one failed!

Seems that it was to be applied to visual.c version 1.32 - but the
version I got from the source files is 1.15.

Could some kind soul please send me either the visual.c ver. 1.32 or
the shar source files for each of the component parts? PLEASE!

As the rest of the patches worked (I had compiled patch 3.0 with the
available patches jsut before) I have re-done "make all" for 2.11.
BUT - vnews bombed every time because " _ngdel undefined". I tried
many different schemes to "define" _ngdel, nothing worked, so I
commented out visual.c and vnews and all I could to get "make" to do
the rest. (In fact this is a test to see if the "new" postnews"
works!). All of the rest have at least compiled or made.

Somehow I got vnews to make before (by changing "xxit" to "exit" -
to get away from "ld failed - _xxit undefined; and commented out the
only occurrence of "ngdel(bfr); at line 1159 of visual.c) but the
date is four days "fast", i.e. Dec 4 instead of Nov 30 and more
importantly, the vnews opens a /temp/newsa* file but steadfastly
refuses to update .newsrc (readnews does). Having never yet gotten
Larry Wall's rn to compile (but I'm going to try again!, now I got
patch to "make" by hacking the Configure script - #!, purports to
work but spawns a new /bin/sh and then screws up everything) I just
have to have a better way to "read news" than "readnews"!

If anyone has any idea how to "fix" the above identified problems,
please let me know!

FYI - this is a CADMUS 9730; Cadmus Rel 3.9 of UNIX V (tm AT&T); a
68010; 1 Meg RAM, etc.

Thanks in advance!
