Is there a good reason why the distributions are mixed in with the newsgroups in the sys file? This seems to me like the source of a great deal of confusion. Also, is there any way to set up a LOCAL moderated group? Best I can tell, any submission to a moderated group goes straight to the nearest backbone machine. The only alternative I can see would be to maintain a complete list of moderators on my own machine, pretending to BE a backbone site.

Yes, there is, and it is relatively easy if you are running 2.11 news (and if you're not, why not?). I describe the particulars in my regular posting about how to construct the news "mailpaths" file. That article is posted monthly to news.lists and to news.admin. If the information in there isn't sufficient, let me know so I can redo it to make it clearer. -- Gene Spafford Software Engineering Research Center (SERC), Georgia Tech, Atlanta GA 30332 CSNet: Spaf @ GATech ARPA: Spaf@gatech.EDU uucp: ...!{akgua,decvax,hplabs,ihnp4,linus,seismo,ulysses}!gatech!spaf

Instructions on doing this should be included in the news 2.11 *distribution*, perhaps somewhere in the installation instructions. It should certainly be included in the *next* release of news (or its replacement). Perhaps an official news "patch" could (should?) be distributed to "update" the documentation for everyone? (Are the news 2.11 maintainers listening out there?) Apologies for suggesting the obvious. No, I haven't read the news 2.11 documentation. No, I am not this site's news administrator. I read these news groups because I'm nos... (oops...) inquisitive. -- -- John G Dobnick Computing Services Division @ University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee UUCP: {ihnp4|uwvax|uwmacc}!uwmcsd1!jgd INTERNET: jgd@csd1.milw.wisc.edu "Knowing how things work is the basis for appreciation, and is thus a source of civilized delight." -- William Safire
