I am having problems with both patches 5 and 6 for news 2.11 and I'm wondering if anyone else has run into them. The changes made in patch #5 to make unbatching faster (patches to ifuncs.c used in inews) seem to be broken, as least on my system. The problem appears to be in the checkbatch() code (where major changes were made), but it doesn't happen all the time. I had a file with only one article, with nothing strange in it, that would cause rnews/inews to core dump every time. Patch #6 was somewhat better for inews in that the "bus error" seems to have occurred after all articles in the batch file had been processed. I started saving the batch files when the problems began, so after backing off to patch #4 again and running the batch through rnews, the log contained only "Duplicate article" messages. Even worse, expire is now broken as well, aborting in the hread routine (header.c). The temporary history files and output log get created and that's as far as it gets. Patch didn't complain about any problems in applying both #5 and #6, so I'm inclined to believe it's either my configuration setup or oversights in upgrade patches. With patch #4 as stable as it is, I don't want to spend the time digging into the code to understand what's going on, especially if someone else has found a fix. If it helps, my configuration is: * Alliant FX-8 running Concentrix V3 (bsd 4.2) * news 2.11 patchlevel 5 or 6 * Receiving compressed batches from a Sun running news 2.10.2 (I'm running the old cunbatch script - 'exec compress -d | rnews') * Defs defined: MANUALLY BATCH "unbatch" MYDOMAIN ".ARPA" GHNAME V7MAIL SORTACTIVE ZAPNOTES DIGPAGE BSD4_2 SENDMAIL -- Jerry Vanden Heuvel Voice: (206) 237-5080 Boeing Commercial Airplane Co.
