[news.software.b] Installing rn and news on AT&T 3b2 running sys V

lowe@psuvax1.psu.edu (Tom Lowe) (09/12/87)

I am attempting to install netnews on an AT&T 3b2/300 computer.
I seem to have gotten 2.11 news software running fine. I get a
feed and can use readnews with no problem. But I am having the
trouble with the rn software.

I appear to have rn with all patches up to and including number 39.
There are several problems with making it to start...

The Configure script runs fine, but when it gets to the makedepend
portion, it tells me to use maketd, which doesn't exist. The
MANIFEST file also makes no mention of it. Looking at the Makefile,
it seems most dependencies are already there, but some additional
things such as jioctl.h, ttydev.h and ttychars.h have to be edited out.
If I run makedepend, it just adds a bunch of junk to the end. Anyway,
after I fix a couple of other problems with redeclarations, I can
get it to compile. I also have to manually install because the
makefile uses the install command assuming a 4.3 system and not sysv.

When I run rn, I get "Caught a SIGSYS--.newsrc restored".

Does anyone know what is wrong? Do I have a bad distribution of rn?
Does anyone out there have it actually running on a 3b2 running 2.0.4
unix (or any other version for that matter)? If you do, please
drop me a line. I would like very much to talk with you. If you have
a good version of the source, also please let me know. I would like
to arrange a direct uucp transfer at my expense.

I can be reached at ihnp4!psuvax1!lowe

call you back so you don't have to pay!

Thanks in advance!
